Vestas

The Teleport can connect to:

  • V27, V29, V34, V39, V42, V44, V47, V52, V63, V66, V80, V90, WD34 and WD40 turbines using Vestas RCS via the current loop, fiber optic or RS232 interface of the Vestas Multi Processor controller (VMP 3500, VMP 4400, VMP 5000.01, VMP 5000.02)
  • V52, V66, V80, V90, V100, V105, V110, V112, V116, V117, V120, V126, V136, V162 turbines using Vestas AP via the ethernet interface of the Vestas Multi Processor controller (VMP 5000.2, VMP 6000, VMP Global) or a switch in the VestasOnline Power Plant Server
  • the power plant controller of parks where the modbus server of the PPC has been enabled by Vestas (for newer models like the V117 and the V162)

Vestas only allows 3rd party EMS control of turbines and power plants with a Vestas O&M contract via Vestas Online Dispatch (VOD). See VOD configuration section below for more details.

Vestas AP over ethernet

The Teleport can be connected directly to the ethernet port of the VMP or a free port in one of the switches in the VestasOnline Power Plant Server

Modbus TCP over ethernet

The Teleport can be connected to the Vestas PPC via a router.

Vestas Online Dispatch API

The Teleport can communicate with a Vestas wind farm using the Vestas Online Dispatch (VOD) API.

Using the VOD API requires the Teleport to send setpoints through Vesta’s API via the cloud. We do not recommend using Vestas VOD control for four main reasons:

  • No internet dependency: you do not want to rely on an internet connection to safeguard your local grid limits. Instead, local control ensures the site remains safe and operational without cloud latency nor dependency on an internet connection.
  • Multi-asset optimization: many sites now combine wind with PV and battery storage (BESS). To maximize revenue and respect grid connection limits, control must be centralized on-site. An edge device like the Teleport can instantly balance generation based on asset priority (e.g., prioritizing wind over solar) and commercial opportunity.
  • Grid congestion management: due to congestion issues, the Distribution System Operators (DSOs) now communicate real-time capacity limits at the grid connection point. These signals require an immediate response from an edge RTU like the Teleport to the turbine to avoid penalties or safety disconnects.
  • Response times and data freshness: besides cloud and internet latency, VOD also has a data freshness delay (stale data). This prevents the Teleport from being able to respond adequately to rapid changes in local consumption or generation.

Connection via a router

Connect the ethernet cable between the ETH1 port of the Teleport and the router. Navigate to our appendix for generic instructions on how to integrate with a router. Make sure to note the IP of Teleport and the IP of the asset(s).
