Warning

Not all SMA devices can be configured remotely. Therefore, the configuration of some models requires the installation of SMA Sunny Explorer software on Windows and a physical connection between the PC and the asset (via Ethernet or Bluetooth) to enable Modbus TCP. Devices that do not support remote configuration do not state the default IP address in their operating manual. These devices are not suitable for reliable remote control and are therefore not supported by Teleport. An example of such an asset are Sunny Tripower 15000TL, 20000TL and 25000TL.

SMA Configuration

Configuration with the user interface of a SMA data manager

1. Access the Web UI of the data manager with its IP address.

2. Log into the user interface.

3. On the top bar, click Select Device and select the data manager from the drop-down menu.

4. On the left sidebar, go to Configuration - External communication.

5. Under Modbus server, click Carry out initial configuration.

6. Check the box at Enable Modbus server.

7. Validate that the Port is 502.

8. On the top bar, click the Home icon

9. In the left sidebar, go to Configuration - Grid management service

10. Choose Configuration & activation for Active Power. In the wizard that is displayed:

    1. ensure total system power is correct

    2. • select “Open loop control”
       • leave all “Signal sources” unchecked
       • enable “Direct selling interface” and select “Standard modbus interface”
    3. • enter 1 at “Setting time”
       • enter 100 at “Active power gradient”
       • press Save

11. In the left sidebar, go to Configuration - Parameter

12. Under Filter, enter External active power

13. Verify that:

    • External active power setpoint via Modbus (direct seller) is On
    • External active power setpoint via Modbus (electric utility company) is Off
    • External active power setpoint is On
    • External active power setpoint 2 is Off

14. If you had to make changes in the previous step, press Save at the bottom

Configuration with the user interface of an SMA inverter or inverter manager

Warning

These steps are tailored to the Sunny Tripower CORE1. They might deviate slightly for different inverter types.

1. Establish a connection to the user interface (see the inverter / inverter manager manual).

2. Log into the user interface as an Installer (access the login page via the inverter / inverter manager’s IP address).

3. Select the Device Parameters tab.

4. Select Edit parameters.

5. Select the parameter group External Communication.

6. To activate the TCP server, make the following settings in the group Modbus > TCP Server:

   • In the drop-down list Activated, select the entry Yes.
   • Verify the Port is set to 502.

7. Select Save all.

Configuration with Sunny Explorer

Warning

These steps are tailored to the Sunny Tripower CORE1. They might deviate slightly for different inverter types.

1. Start Sunny Explorer on the computer and create Speedwire plant (see Sunny Explorer user manual).

2. Log into the Speedwire system as Installer.

3. Select the SMA inverter to be configured in the system directory.

4. Select the tab Settings.

5. Select the parameter group External Communication.

6. Select Edit.

7. To activate the TCP server, make the following settings in the group Modbus > TCP Server:

   • In the drop-down list Activated, select the entry Yes.
   • Verify the Port is set to 502.

8. Select Save.

Modbus TCP over ethernet

Connect the ethernet cable between the ETH1 port of the Teleport and the LAN port of the SMA asset. If the LAN port of the asset is already occupied (e.g. connected to a router), navigate to our appendix for instructions on how to integrate with a router. The Modbus TCP over ethernet (Speedwire) settings can be configured similarly to enabling Modbus TCP.

1. From Device Parameters/Settings, depending on which configuration type you have followed, navigate to System communication.

2. Select Edit and verify the following settings:

   • IP Address: 192.168.0.10
   • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
   • Gateway: 0.0.0.0 or 192.168.0.11 if you want to use e.g. Sunny Portal
   • DNS server IP: 8.8.8.8

3. If you are connecting multiple assets, follow the same instructions with a different IP address.
